Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is regarded as a revolutionary of musical theatre, who, in works such as »The Marriage of Figaro« and »Don Giovanni«, succeeded in elevating the popular style of opera buffa into musically dramatic composition. But throughout his life, Mozart also tackled the traditional form of opera seria with its ancient heroes and rulers – especially when a lucrative composition commission beckoned. In 1791, in the middle of his work on »The Magic Flute«, he was commissioned to write a coronation opera for Prague. Those responsible decided in favor of a libretto by »Altmeister« Pietro Metastasio. Set to music many times before, the opera follows the story of Roman Emperor Titus, a man praised as the ideal ruler. Mozart and his librettist Mazzolà intensified the original stage sequence, reduced the number of arias, and inserted numerous ensembles atypical for the opera seria. In doing so they heightened awareness for the dichotomy of Titus’ given title »Mercy«: Is a merciful king who forgives his enemies really the better ruler? Or does Vitellia have a point when she states in the opera: »I do not fear his severity, I fear his mercy.«
