Kátja Kabanová

Opera in three acts by Leoš Janáček
Libretto by Leoš Janáček
Based on the play »The Thunderstorm« by Alexander Ostrowski as translated by Vincenc Červinka
Sung in Czech with German surtitles
Co-production with the Scottish Opera

Kátja Kabanová lives with her husband Tichon and her mother-in-law Kabanicha, a rich merchant’s widow. Tichon, an alcoholic, is heavily influenced by his mother, who tyrannizes her daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, Kátja secretly has feelings for Boris, nephew of the merchant Dikoj. When Tichon leaves on a business trip, she can no longer resist her yearning and meets with Boris several times, who reciprocates her love. However, Tichon returns prematurely. A thunderstorm ultimately brings all the participants together in an abandoned building, where the desperate Kátja confesses her indiscretion before her husband and his mother. A few days later Boris is banished by his uncle to a distant trading post. After his departure, Kátja plunges into the river.

Leoš Janáček's breakthrough as a composer came at the age of 61 with the Prague premiere of his opera »Jenůfa« in 1916. Though he had a close connection to the Czech language, whose melody and rhythm influenced his music, he ultimately achieved international success as an opera composer. The drama about Kátja Kabanová tells the story of a sensitive woman who breaks down at the bigotry of a small-town society surrounding her. Created by Janáček and described as a representative of a »Moravian verismo«, the opera possesses an incomparable blend of realism and lyricism.
